No, they were desperately needed. The difference between the original GameBoy and the GameBoy Advance was huge. Even back in 2004, RBY was outdated and needed remakes badly.

The worst part is we are possibly looking at "Legends" type remakes from now on, so games like XY will stay forever unfinished and unrefined

Damn, way to make me feel old. I remember sitting in PE talking about these when they came out. My friend and I were also disappointed that it wasn't Emerald version, although we did eventually get that.

They served as missing mons farms for Hoenn, nothing else, at least the rematches were good as for the rest nothing that super unique, Sevii Islands were okayish and served a little to put the plot and timeline together introducing the Rocket Executives that would have kept Team Rocket alive in Gen 2/4 Johto.

Leaf Green was the first Pokemon game I actually went out and bought myself. I thought it was kinda weak then but appreciated it as the expansion pak for Emerald that it was. Think they're the worst games in the series now.
