Digimon doesn't do this; most Digimon are basically "characters" (often with set personalities and skills, too) rather than just a species, so every Digimon gets their own separate fanbase and the end result is a ton of tiny-ass little cliques that don't really interact with each other much like how a popular gacha game might have fans of specific characters or fans of several, but nobody really gives a fuck about the game or the franchise that the game belongs to.
In Pokemon, every Pokemon is a blank slate. Is it a boy? Is it a girl?
Is it a pet? A friend? A co-worker? A tool?
Maybe it's a total cunt, maybe it's super nice.
Ash's Pikachu is vastly different than that rando Pikachu or THAT rando Pikachu or those Cosplay Pikachu in both moves and personality.
Is that Lopunny a total flirt, or a kickboxer? That Machamp is doing construction work, while THAT Machamp is snapping Pokemon like twigs in a battles.
The flexibility allows people to more easily turn them into OCs or as nameless sex toys in lewd art.
