Does Gen 2 get difficult? I thought the earlier games were supposed to be harder.
Whitney wasn't even that bad, honestly Morty was worse with Night Shade.

Also rate my team I guess. Am I ready for the Elite Four?

Of course it's not difficult: it is a game for children - it was never designed to be this min-maxed. If you want difficulty, then you need to adjust your style of play, otherwise, no, it's never going to be difficult to OHKO Rattata's with your 150 BP w/ STAB Earthquake from Donphan. This shouldn't be hard to understand.

kek. No, save for the asinine level curve once you get to Blackthorn Gym. If you haven't played Emerald, Platinum, or US/UM, those games are what you wanna go for. They're not what I'd call super difficult really, but they offer a pretty reasonable challenge.

Not really, everything is pretty undertuned compared to the rest of the series. E4 are a decent challenge but you shouldn't have too much trouble. Mid-30s with a solid team (like yours) is enough.

Donphan didn't even learn Earthquake I used the TM I just got. If you're a gen 2 defender you should know half of them were kind of dead weight.

You understand the mechanics. If you're actually playing gen 2 for the first time, you're most likely using a guide.
Do you want harder battles? After defeating Red your team will be around level 50, perfect for Stadium 2 Cups and Gym Leader Castle. It's very easy to use a gbc rom on a N64 emulator.

Honestly Chuck's Mind Reader and Dynamic Punch combo was the most annoying for me in Johto (though they nerfed him in HGSS). Tate and Liza in Emerald is probably the hardest Gym Battle in any of the games I've played. Cynthia is the hardest champion. None of these are hard though. Ultra Necrozma in USUM is honestly harder than any of those fights, but I guess they are comparing to games like SwSh, SV, and XY when they say the older games are harder.

when people talk about the "difficulty" of older games, what they're really talking about is game design with friction. they just don't have the terminology for it. but you can see it in other franchises too. for example, World of Warcraft, everybody used to say vanilla WoW was more difficult, but when Classic WoW came out people realized it's actually really easy, and that newer expansions take much more skill. but, Classic WoW still has friction in its gameplay, which has been removed through the addition of QoL and streamlined game processes. exact same thing that happened to Pokemon. so when people talk about that kind of "difficulty" in old games, they're not really talking about the level of skill they require. it's more like how much time you have to invest in the game, and lack of QoL features. the preference for one over the other is really a generational divide, older players prefer games with high friction but lower skill ceilings, while younger players tend to prefer frictionless gameplay but with higher skill.

If the game could make him use Exeggcute and Growlithe's moveset for those levels instead, it probably still wouldn't be amazing but it would be a decent upgrade. Yellow solved this issue by expanding the custom move engine so that any trainer can have any move on any Pokémon, with any unspecified move just defaulting to whatever level up move would be in that slot by default.

If we're including Elite Four rematches, it's probably Black and White. Black Tower & White Treehollow in BW2 make the level spike much more manageable, though Audinos exist even in BW, so I can't complain.

If we use the team in the OP as an example, they are all consistently leveled with movesets heavily subsidized by TMs and they all have held items to support their primary type. In GSC, this requires a bit of effort and knowledge on the player's part. Five of those held items are time locked behind NPCs who only appear on specific days. Aquiring all those TMs is a money sink because GSC doesn't give you a lot of money. Some grinding is required to keep all of those Pokemon matched at a decent level.

Compare to modern games where NPCs go out of their way to throw items at you, money is easy to get, the prevelance of EXP candies and the forced EXP share guarantees your entire team will be overlevelled. Every Pokemon has had their natural movesets buffed so that TMs aren't even necessary.

GSC is easy but newer games are fucking braindead.

Everyone claiming this is is a min maxed team is braindead. 4/5 of those TM's bought in the mall or just given to you. The only one you have to grind for is Thunder.

Also there's a note right before victory road that tells you where all of the items are, and you can change your game clock.

The real thing the makes the new games easier is EXP share overleveling you.

Once you are past Whitney and Morty, any semblance of difficulty is gone. Yes you are more than ready for the E4, don't worry about levels much when you get badge boosts.

If you want a vanilla game that has several difficulty spikes, try Platinum. Otherwise it's romhacks for you.

Once again proving that what makes the older games easy is the player having both the knowledge and ability to manipulate the in-game mechanics. There is zero reason to do shit like this in modern games

OP if you want a real challenge, take your team to Stadium 2. That is the battlefield that separates the boys from the men. It also can't be understated what an integral yet underrated part of the gen 2 experience it is. pls pls take your team to Stadium 2. Theyre almost ready.

Like other posters said, vanilla Pokemon games will never be difficult. Recently I felt the urge to boot up Crystal again, and to make it just a little bit more challenging I wanna try out pokemon I haven't used before and try to include some shitmons like Butterfree and Parasect. And not really give a shit about team synergy and stuff like that. That should at least make it fun and a bit less of a walkover.

Same goes to almost any game. Gen 2 is notorious for whitney, claire, e4 level difference and red. And all of them can be done pretty easily if you grind.
It still is challenging, especially depending on your playstyle and the biggest thing: it is still fun. You can explore find new pokemon, do a whole new team of pokemon you never used etc.

E.g. the most challenging gen is for me 5 and 7, still I can spam x-items, I can grind, use some specifc strats etc. and make it easy it still is fun. Especially if you try breeding and egg moves.

I forget. Its just a vibe youve gotta play it. Lots of gen 2 era sugimori designs and early pkmn franchise feel. The minigames are super solid.

even through emulation the feeling of transferring pokemon from GBC to N64 makes both games feel "layered" in a way that is greater than the sum of its parts. (The physical GBC/N64 plug in thing actually is finnicky and stinks so emulation legit feels better)
Something about seeing your guys in 3D and taking on the tough gauntlet of trainers in the tower will make them into more memorable comrades than the base game adventure. Stadium 1 and 2 have extremely good animations and models that any pokemon fan will love.
The last guys in the tower are cheap bastards that are satisfying to defeat, but the early guys are still fun to "perfect" (KO their 3 pkmn without losing any of your own to get an extra life) oh yea, every battle you choose 3 of your 6 to use. I love the little mix and match team comps that happen.

Maybe I'm dumb or maybe my team wasn't as good as I thought but I felt like a challenged tactician. And everyone on my team had exciting moments to shine and be MVP

No gen 2 is never really difficult. The only difficulty is if you fight the elite four or Red underleveled or just do not prepare whatsoever or don't have any good mons for the gyms which is hard to pull off actually. The game feeds you good ass mons constantly.

You might run into issues with Lance because your electabuzz and feraligatr might not be strong enough to kill the dragonites before they kill you. You will probably be fine though. Just make an attempt. Cool fucking team, OP. picrel my latest gen 2 playthrough

You're clearly an adult though, which is really what they mean. The team in the OP has an excellent typing mix, good held items, and good movesets. The only HMs are higher power and accuracy STAB moves. This type of team trivializes any pokemon game, which is designed to be beaten by kids running a 3-mon team with bad coverage, duplicate STAB attacks, and HM slaves. Whitney and Claire can be difficult to beat for those types of teams, which is what people reference when they talk about gen 2 difficulty.

Gen 1 and 2 are especially easy in this sense because they use "stat experience" instead of EVs. Basically the same as EVs except you can max every stat, and even trash-tier pokemon give good stat experience across the board because it's whatever their base stats are. If you use the same team consistently, they are waaaay stronger than other same-level pokemon by the time you reach the Elite 4.

Which is why the battle tower in crystal was a nice introduction to strategy, by having rules about teams and items. As well as the challenge of the opponents being maxed stats, which made the level 10 group very hard without breeding for moves etc, as well as the grind needed for a lvl 100 team.
