Looks like all the cheat stuff + Rebalancing is exclusive to the Pink version, so you don't need to worry about it if you're playing Recharged Yellow, or about having Clefairy as the starter lol.

NTA but I feel that, I always avoid betas too until something more complete drops. Both the Coral and Darkfire betas look pretty enticing, but I played Unbound 2.0 before ever even seeing 1.0 and I'm pretty happy about it from what I've seen... Although I did play Gaia 3.0 too and all the snippets of 4.0 I've seen on an already impressive game just makes me more excited, but at least that one just has the Post-Game left.

Some cool hacks just never get finished though like you said so no harm in diving in I guess, like "Gary's Mod" where you play through FRLG as Blue with a different perspective on events and new areas. That one had so much potential, but I still don't regret playing it because I found what WAS added pretty cool, might even play it again one day too.

It looks like the Lumi devs are working on an eventual natdex mod for BDSP. It would be so sick having every mon in one of the 3D games with better animations and lighting shit, but that's still a ways off it looks like.

For right now, Elite Redux has every Pokemon in the first 9 gens in its online dex, so I'd check that out. The 4 abilities gimmick and QoL shit look really sick.

Not being able to grind and manually setting levels feels very wrong to me. I get it that it removes grinding, but it also turns the game into an empty shell of its former self.
I tried ROWE instead and it's way less offensive. Too bad exiolite seems bugged and my big brain Vigoroth plan didn't exactly pan out.

No, it's a .gba file that I cannot open with the software I listed. Unless there is a way to decomp the rom, there is no way for me to change the overworld sprites.
I CAN open it in unlz, but I dunno if overworld sprites are included and if so, what's the address for them.

How is Porymap compared to Advancemap?
Last time I dabbled in this I remember disliking advancemap so much that I went and downloaded RPGMXP and Essentials instead and their tool was much better for making maps

Is there a specific reason why changing base stats and movesets isn't more commonly seen in Pokémon fangames? There's rebalance ones, yes, but ones with their own region and narrative often stick to what's been established by canon. Is ot autism? Not caring enough?

people making their own regions probably just prioritize that over rebalancing. they're doing that presumably because they want to craft a world and tell a story, fiddling with the Pokemon themselves is a whole other area of interest and set of skills. and both are a lot of work on their own.
speaking as somebody who's primary interest is in mapping & worldbuilding, if my project ever took off I would make a few small stat and movepool changes, but not extensively. I don't have the brain for that kind of thing

I expect Butterfree to have low defenses, sure, but making it -better- doesn't necessarily mean that it'd lose its identity. If you're not going to have mostly Fakemon I don't see why you wouldn't take more liberties to make things more interesting and enjoyable. There's only so many times I can go through the same old earlygame song and dance and see the same moves on the same Pokémon and the same strategies (or lack thereof)...

Not really a big deal, I'm actually enjoying the mod but it would be better if I could do with it as I pleased. Pretty disappointing that we're still not very far with modding GBA files, you would think that with how old these games are it would be a piece of cake to do what you want with them.
I will see if I can edit the battle sprites of trainers just to see if unlz will actually change them, that's about the only program that reads this romhack. I don't actually mind how trainer sprites look in-battle in GBA games so I don't imagine I will make much changes tho, maybe replace some Hoenn trainers with their Kanto counterparts. Is there a place where I can look for custom 3rd gen sprites that are just ready to go, 64x64 pixels and all that?

You can, but you're SOL when the dev is a fag and doesn't release his source code.
The old hacking tools are looking for a specific address, and decomp editing will move data to a totally different place and the tool won't find what it needs. It would be like adding a new chapter in the middle of a book without updating the table of contents.

The decomp doesn't use a suite of tools, because you just edit the source code directly. And the free nature of decomp hacking means that it's impossible for a single tool to edit several different hacks.

Yup, same issue crops up when using codes too. I wanted to use shiny codes for some of my team members in B&W3: Genesis (Crystal decomp hack), and Inclement Emerald, but none of the normal codes worked. Ended up using YDA's patch for the latter, and even with the massively increased odds toggle it was still miserable hunting them :/

I want to start making my own shiny codes for decomp hacks I like, but I don't even know where to start.
Maybe editing the values and recompiling the rom would be easier?

What a coincidence, I was actually looking at the Pokecommunity page for Pokemon Orange last night because I remembered it existed (it was HOTY on Pokecommunity in 2017).

I remember seeing it several years back and wanted to let it cook, looks like not only is the original version fully complete, but the dev has been working on another overhauled version of it with new writing and updated mechanics like PSS and abilities called "Island Walker":

Porymap is for editing the decomps. You can't use it with cfru. Unless you specifically want to make a Kanto hack you might want to use pokeemerald-expansion instead of cfru.

Any other hacks in the same vein as Altered Emerald? I'm not a huge fan of mods that add out-of-generation Pokemon outside of evolutions, and it was a really nice way to re-play Hoen but with a heavy twist on gameplay. I know there's stuff like 386 and 493 patches, but Altered Emerald fully remasters the routes and adds a few more as well.

I played it before it got delisted over the creator putting racist jokes and hitler memes in his other games. It's mostly just Kanto, Again, but with weird edgy humour in several places Erika straight up mercs some bikers ruining flowers west of Celadon then acts all cutesy like one of those yandere memes and additional story segments, mostly at the ending where it veers off into a Modern Pokémon Legendary Encounter Climax with Giovanni and Mewtwo . I think it's a good addition and an improvement, I agree Sevii Islands should be a priority but those could be a while regardless and maybe the dev just wanted a break from all the area recreation shit.

Just the fact the game has the Battle Frontier alone justifies the addition, being able to change stat values on the fly and give yourself competitive items is huge QoL rarely seen in hacks.
With the Pokemon rebalancing more mons will be generally viable for the longer Frontier streaks.

Where should I be looking if I want the definitive version of each game where you can obtain all pokemon up to that generation (with some challenge added to accommodate the additions and no censorship, if possible) and b) that but also with features from future generations including pokemon, moves, etc?

Looks like you're on the right track! Drayano also has a Fire Red hack called Fire Red Omega if you didn't know, it's ancient now but still great if you prefer something more old-fashioned.

I'd say as a rule of thumb, most hacks using the pokeemerald and pokecrystal decomps are quite modern, as well as any FRLG hacks using the (older) MrDollSteak base and the (newer) CFRU (Complete Fire Red Upgrade) engine. Many of the hacks listed above do just that!

I am here to say FUCK Scorched Silver. The dev does not have confidence in their level scaling and has a Miltank that knows Memento in the Pokemon Center of the first Gym town. Did some light grinding on the way to the first Gym? Battled every trainer on the route? Went a little ahead for extra exp? Fuck you! Lol, complaining about using your free will to do somethimg optional is silly. If the instant grind offered by the dev isn't your preference don't use it or complain about it.
Do you use items in battle or not? Do you use Switch or Set mode? Do you do mono-type runs or nuzlockes? Do you use competitive or shitmons primarily? Pokemon is a game about customizing your own experience, hacks typically just enhance that aspect with QoL shit.

It adds a bunch of NPCs to Littleroot, makes every pokemon look different, and have random moves and types. I was wondering why people reported such issues here. Sheeeesh, what a huge list. I actually did forget to mention Peridot and Quarantine Crystal that were both made by anons here, planning to play those myself at some point as they look really good.

Shiny Gold X was one of the first romhacks I ever played and I really liked it, but unfortunately it ended roughly after Misty. It was around a decade ago I played it and it was pretty old even then, some chad named HacksRepairMan apparently completed it a few years back but unfortunately I think the X version (hard mode) got left in the dust.

I watched some playthroughs of Sienna and Flora Sky by a Youtuber called "LuxrayNews" back in the day, don't remember much about them though but I think I've heard Flora Sky got updated somewhat recently(?). I remember Sienna turned me off from the idea of later generation mons being retroactively added because the implementation seemed so scuff, but modern hacks have changed my mind, I respect the ambitions for the time.
I also watched Shofu play a bit of Victory Fire back then too, the dialogue was kinda painful to read grammatically.

R.O.W.E looks pretty interesting as another "open-world" that actually aims to modernize itself unlike Crystal Clear, but I've been seeing some anons lamenting an E4 difficulty spike. I'm planning let it potentially update more before playing, more interested in Blazing Emerald, Elite Redux, and Seaglass for Hoenn atm.

I don't really fuck with gen 1 much at all (though I am planning to play K.E.P and Brown again), but from a little bit I've read Red++ looks quite nice, I think it's another decomp hack(?).
I did want to finally play Yellow years ago and reading up on the Yellow Legacy changes woke that up again, but now that Recharged Yellow/Pink is out idk if I'll bother personally. It does look cool though.

Liquid Crystal is another old hack in a similar vein to Shiny Gold, Johto recreated in gen 3. I liked the tilesets and weather changes, but didn't care for the slog of the random Team Saturn grunts, I think they added some Orange Island shit I never did but I heard it was buggy, ymmv I guess.

There's a few anecdotes/first impressions for you, ultimately reading up on each hack and making note of when they were made and what they bring to the table would be best to make your own judgement calls, godspeed anon.

Not necessarily.
IE currently only has up to gen 7 mons while ER has gen 9 + new megas + "Redux" forms of existing mons + new moves + 1/3 ability choices and 3 innates gimmick for every mon.
It's definitely much more shit added, but it also fundamentally changes the progression of the game by being able to freely edit stats and having multiple of every competitive available from the start to maximize customization and preparation. I THINK the game is harder to compensate but I haven't compared them yet. There's other differences too but you can read up on them yourself.

If you're like me you might like all those additions added in ER, but I'm sure some people would have gripes, so they might prefer IE.
Personally I've been waiting for IE 2.0 for a while now, it's going to add a bunch of extra game options and toggles, new custom moves and abilities (Conversion-Z is one, Dusknoir is getting an ability that heals it from ghost moves or something), and a few new megas of its own such as Mega-Zebstrika and Mega-Parasect. I presume it's gonna add all the new gen 8/9 mons too.
All of that should serve to give IE some of its unique identity back, ER couldn't exist without it and it's an amazing hack in its own right!

IE is a bit more faithful to traditional Pokemon gameplay, no fakemon "regional" forms added, just a few fakemon megas for Milotic/Flygon/Kingdra, and some fanfic abilities like Blitz Boxer on Hitmonchan (most broken shit in existence).

Picrel is the team I'm planning to use in my first run of ER.

Nobody knows, I doubt even Buffel Saft knows. The last post by the dev in their Discord's "updates" channel was over a year ago (pic related), but they were talking about some upcoming features in 2.0 just a few months ago. They mention in picrel that development has been slower because of life stuff, but they're still chipping away.
Elite Redux's "complete" version dropped a couple weeks ago, but more updates are supposedly coming. Hope you have fun with whichever one you choose anon!

Water is my favourite type, but Hoenn already has Archie/Team Aqua, Juan, and even Glacia to a degree so Wallace isn't necessary and oversaturates the type. I've read that the dev removed May to make room for other shit, but since the hack has developed a lot since then it's gotten "basically impossible" to add her back in. It's lame I agree and lots of people don't like it, but at least Brendan got several different outfits, it's something.

As an aside, I'm looking forward to the "visual varients" teased last year.

I like Steven, its just that Gamefreak decided that Wallace was the champion and Steven is the super boss. If you want a hack that wants to be "vanilla-esque", you should keep things as is. Legacy just undermines Steven's superboss status and Wallace is relegated to post game content.

I installed VBA-M and then grabbed Emerald Seaglass. It starts and plays fine, so what are the "patches" even used for? According to the pastebin it's needed. Am I missing something?

Yes, natures can be changed really early before the first gym in the pretty petal shop on the route under Rustboro (where you get the wailmer pail). You can change abilities with ability capsules and patches, capsules are available after 3 gym badges and patches are available after 4

Seeing the same thing with Seaglass, in the discord and the solo dev making it is a college student who's already clearly burnt out and doesn't really want to update the hack anymore.
Made a whole suggestions channel and then after a while made a discord announcement basically saying "I'm done adding shit to the game so don't ask, I'm excited to move on to other projects! (aka: I don't give a fuck about this hack anymore)"

This wouldn't be a problem if the hack was open source and other people could continue development and add other features to it. But the real problem is the dev also kinda sucks at coding and keeps breaking shit and not really understanding why, last patch talking to your mom in any capacity froze the game, just breaking it completely, that was fixed but other shit like graphical issues, moves being bugged, etc. could all be fixed if they let more competent people look over the code and figure out how to fix it, yet still it isn't open source, most likely because they don't want to give up the precious assets they made/bought

i didn't hate fairy until i realised how many old interactions it erased. psychic fairy is a dumb as fuck combination. psychic's two big weaknesses for decades(plural, in case you can't tell) are just gone with psychic-fairy. fairy is awful balance wise.

Hard to say which one is most completed, they all seem to be w.i.p's.

>Inclement Emerald: 2.0 has been in the pipeline for a few years. According to Buffel Saft 2.0 will unfortunately be breaking save compatibility with older versions (>>56459211). I also heard the Battle Frontier is planned for v3.0 after that, but can't confirm that yet.

>Elite Redux: Version 2.1 just left beta a few weeks ago and is now essentially finished. According to its dev in picrel though there are still hundreds of new megas and Redux forms planned to be added and more updates in coming months. The Battle Frontier is also planned for v3.0.

>Emerald Seaglass: ever since it dropped recently updates have been relatively frequent, and v3.0 is in the works to add Brendan and Msy it appears. I'm wating until it stabilizes a bit before playing, also hoping they add back the original battle backgrounds from v1.1, but idk if they'll do it.

I didn't mean that in a negative or positive way, just it's something the hack does. But it was a lead in to the fake type it uses that I have those issues with. I wasn't clear, so to reiterate: it removed fairy, restored normal type to some mons. Added "aether" type that's offensively strong against nothing, offensively weak to poison, dark, aether, resists flying, ground, fire, water, aether and weak to dark and poison. It seems to me it's supposed to function like fairy, but addressing more types that have good neutral coverage and in the process gives an unneeded offensive buff to dark.

This --> 56468091 I was able to get an Armarogue with a Sun Stone before even entering Cerulean City lol, they get Mega Launcher and Sharpness. In the latest RR update they were both given new shinies too!
Elite Redux also added them and they get some good shit there too.

Hope you enjoy it if you do play anon! RR added costumes and stuff last update so you could play as N or Alain or even Cynthia if helps the experience for you, I always play minimal grinding mode too personally.
I found Armarouge very fun to use with all its Mega Launcher moves, it's like having 4 STABs. Kinda salty I used it before they added the shiny but oh well, maybe I'll use it again one day.

The only differences are sprites, pokedex entries, encounter rates, what legendary you get first and the title screen. You can get all pokemon in either version.

I wish colloseum or gale of darkness had robust scenes. I still like the stadium pokemon models alot and I bet the pacing of the games would feel a little better if they replaced double battles with single.

She also *temporarily* allied herself with Aklove, the pink haired Kalosian dickhead that tried using The Ultimate Weapon™ to cause a mass genocide across Borrius, also kidnaps your mother and friends.

She also worked with The Shadows to create the violent and dangerous Shadow Warriors, even though their creation needs a *willing* human and *probably unwilling* Pokemon sacrifice to create. She kept pushing them to dive deeper into the experimentation and manufacturing of them even when it became apparent that the leader of The Shadows Zeph and his admins, aka his scientists buddies Marlon and Ivory, wouldn't be able to revive their dead families that way. She backstabbed them to support Aklove.

She has no allegiances, people are scared of her, and her cronies seem like the bad kinds of scientists too. Hope that jogs your memories a bit.
