I can still understand why it might still be offputting for some people who can't get over the two-fold hurdles of having starter choice taken away and that specific shillmon pushed onto them.
The protagonist starts as a pseudo-silent protagonist who mainly only 'talks' in inner monologue but as the game goes on they start openly talking more with other characters. I know some don't like protagonists as characters on principle, but I find MC-kun to be tolerable enough and they say enough on-point things I don't feel like they're being hijacked to fulfill some weird insane authoral narrative like how talking protagonists can sometimes feel in other english-developed fangames.
The amount of cuckshit that goes on in this game zooms right past being annoying and cruises right into being hilarious when it becomes clear it's not just some weird developer-bullying-the-player thing like it comes across as in almost every English fangame with a cuck fetish, but that tons of characters and even the main antagonist get cucked out of either romance or an ideal/goal they place on a pedestal. It stopped being annoying for me and was just comedic how hard the game was committing to the thematic bit after a while.
The difficulty of the game is very easy. It's well suited for the experience though I think.
The game itself comes off as very romantically and sexually frustrated, for lack of a better term at times. The density of LOOK! SEXO!!! jokes, especially involving pokemon, or jokes involving people just casually breaking the hearts of other people for fun or trivial things is very high relative to the number of throwaway gags often present in fangames.

The care put into mapping every route, making the world feel alive and inhabited with both humans and pokemon, the choreography in cutscenes, the expressiveness in both overworld sprites and the portraits, voice clips, full-artwork scenes, and the varied battle backgrounds that even shift to match the time of day all lead to an amazingly immersive experience.
At its heart this is a character driven game, not unlike Rejuv, where the pretext of gathering all of the badges to become champion only exists to get the protagonist moving initially before it's clear there's way more important things going on and the badges incidentally show up along the way. The game is successful at this by integrating the initial hook with an overall really well-rounded and likable cast that behaves in mostly-believable ways relative to their established characterizations and rarely feels like things happen or people act a certain way because the author needs them to solely in order to facilitate the next major thing happening. Everything that happens gradually builds to later things even if the immediate consequences of something aren't clear at the time. The seemingly filler sidequest about the Litwick and the autistic child who soulbonds with the protagonist? The soulbond saves the protagonist later and royal glowniggers spot Sakura in the forest leading to a chain of events eventually causing Kaleo getting infected by Nihilego later. I appreciate how these sequences don't follow the normal shit writing tropes of blatantly showing you Chekov's Gun several times and acting like it's cinema when it's fired later, yet also still have a very clear and comprehensible trail of cause and effect so the writer isn't just pulling things out of their asses either.

In other games, there's not really a clear explanation of why people join the evil terrorist cults outside of either having low standards for what jobs they're willing to do or some presumably well-intentioned misplaced sense of ideological justification and neither of which are sympathetic when they find themselves doing evil shit later, despite what reborncord and similar insist is good writing. Unbreakable Ties is very clear in how it works; first the Royal Family is presented as completely invincible. If you step out of line, you die. If your city steps out of line, you get Fug'd. To keep people demoralized, executions are held each year for no reason other than to remind the populace that they live at the Royal's pleasure and nothing more. The people are in a state of despair and desperation, doing anything they can to both survive and protect their loved ones. It's clear via the recruitments of Vesta and Kaleo that initiation into their ranks isn't often without coercion, and even most of the grunts don't seem too happy with what they're doing as they themselves are also controlled through fear. The lower level demoralizers are demoralized themselves.

It reminds me of the ending of Murder on the Orient Express where the detective ends the story clutching his crucifix trying to make peace with himself if he did the right thing or not, clearly having a moral crisis of faith. Eventually once she develops the backbone to die doing what's right, she inspires her former boss to begin questioning her position as well, and while Vesta gaining the power to triumph over Majime in combat due to being in the right is extremely japanese and anime-troped, it was an effective moment for both of their characters. In Vesta's final moments, she ideologically rebukes the demoralization ritual and inspires the population to stand up, even if she won't live to see the results. All it takes is one figurative drop of blood from the 'invincible' gods to dispel the notion of omniscience and their rule by terror comes crumbling down. It's more or less the plot of A Bug's Life retold in a Pokemon game thematically speaking.
This game's storytelling is effective because it believably casts the circumstances that causes everyone to act the way they do as well as believably creates a catalyst that'd inspire a change in their way of thinking as opposed to the author forcing them to for the sake of the story.

While MC-kun didn't do it alone, instead of the game writing a novel telling you how cool Erin, Venam and Melia are, this game lets the side characters go on their own adventures that ultimately contribute to the larger payoff as well as serving as self-contained growth arcs for them. Despite "only" being a 6 gym demo, this game feels far more narratively and thematically complete than even the fully finished Reborn does, say nothing of the schizophrenic trashfire that is Rejuv despite all 3 games sharing a lot of underlying themes and design tropes.

This was the first screenshot I saw when I was going to download this game. I thought "lol that looks like some dumb shit, this'll probably be some fun for a little bit." By the time I got to this part in the game I was like "LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" no sarcasm or ironic enjoyment, I was 100% onboard. That whole sequence, most of this game was just a blast to play through. Most of the characters are great, good and evil, with the only one I really don't care about being Majime. I came around to liking god rodolpho, and darek didn't turn into the edgy rival like most do. I think in terms of favorite scenes I have to give it to Eda, though, the way she just kept kicking the shit out of people was very cathartic. Any other game it'd be like "even though you're a mega terrorist I won't harm you, it'd be morally wrong..." blah blah blah, meanwhile Eda stops latias from flying her away just so she can take down more people. And the scene at the palace gates where Blaziken kicks the guard through the door...excellent. I'm not looking for bloodshed and mass murdering, but there's a point where shit has to get done and for once the good guys actually do everything they can to win the day. very cathartic, very fun, kino, etc. I also have to give the game the credit for making me care about lucario, formerly known as shilldog, he is now in the same spot as truffles from ashen frost. I also found the edward and lena relationship parts very touching. Vesta's short flashback slightly less so, and I swear I read it right that her mom died from the smoking and not the 100 beatings...very weird choice. Every part of how the story was crafted, the dialogue, using the pmd sprites, character portraits, simply perfection. My only two big negatives are the youtube links and the jumpscare mansion, but I just can't deny this game anything other then A+, top tier. I have all the faith in the world this game will surpass everything we've played so far, this game will be the GOAT.
