What IS a Pokemon, exactly?

Like why is this a Pokemon? It was supposedly created in cyberspace then made manifest so...I don't understand. That constitutes it being a Pokemon?

Well retcons make that complicated.

The original lore is that Pokemon took place on Earth, humans, animals, and all.

One day creatures with weird powers(pokemon) just started appearing.

We can only assume Pokemon originate from a different source of life than what humans/animals originate from.

It's a mix. There's mentions of real Earth events, places, and animals, but then Kanto is very different from the same region in Japan, even if it's also similar and based on it. It's deliberately ambiguous as to whether it's a made-up world or diverged from our own at some point because it didn't really matter. As the series progressed, it became more clear that they wanted Pokemon to exist in a world seperate from ours.

Same way Deoxys is from space, but it's a pokemon. clefairy are aliens, but count as pokemon. There are things like dolls that come to life and are pokemon.

I should imagine any sort of strange creature or animal counts as a pokemon. Assuming you count the retcon of other animals existing in the pokemon world it's safe to say all aniamals or creatures become are pokemon.
The only thing that doesn't seem to fit in is creatures who aren't smart enough or humans. Though I don't know if anyone has ever tried to put a human in a pokeball.

Oak's lecture in the original zukan made it clear animals are different to pokemon, even when they coexist.

Regardless I still think it comes down to any creature smart enough to become them. All lesser animals are probably pokemon, just non usable pokemon.
Because you get things like references to animals, CRABhammer ragingBULL electricMOUSE pokemon. But they stopped showing actual animals inthe later series except for things like, starfish and clams. So all those things are pokemon, they are just not pokemon that are usable.

Shit's changed since early gens. Pokemon canon is barely existing at the best of times plus they remove stuff like Arbok's neck markings per region so that's not canon anymore. They've gone from anatomical diagrams to cutesy family friendly stuff. Then they fuck it up with the alternate timeline/dream/imagination/universe stuff.

Only if you consider software an object. It might be an object-mon in the sense of an object data structure.
Also I’ve come to terms with pokemon just not having lore. The Pokédex is ridiculous and the in game lore about the pokemon is inconsistent with itself. A ton of retcons. More fun to just not think about it.

Presumably, that is Mew.
With maybe the exception Ultra Beasts and Arceus, Mew predates all Pokemon and naturally evolved into all different Pokemon.
So a creature naturally evolved with the ability to shrink, and all it's ancestors of that original Pokemon have this defining trait.
The ability to shrink defines a Pokemon.
Where Mew came from is another question. Given that dimensional travel is canon, it's probably not natural to the world?
