Golem is still a premiere physical tank that can deal solid damage with STAB Rock and Ground moves
Always a good pick to get through the campaign as easily as possible

Still one of a select group of mons that naturally learns Earthquake, and can toss out some curveballs here and there like Fire Blast thanks to Gen1 moveset weirdness for Kaiju-like mons
Get one with Sturdy, toss on a Weakness Policy, and Rock Polish to a KO or two

There just isn't enough that separates the concepts from each other. It would be kind of like having a grass and wood type. Or a flying and air type. Just no point, and led to a bunch of gen 1 shitmons that were never able to be rescued from their doomed typing. Every single rock type in that gen was also ground for a reason. They should have been the same thing.

Fossils are only rock type so the type wouldn't be limited with mineral creatures(simlar to grass having fungi despite not being plants)

Give it some ability that let's it take reduced damage from contact moves.
On that note, Pokemon could use second "Abilities". I'm thinking something like:
>Remove Natures
>Add "Talents"
>Talents = small pool of ~20 broadly distributed Abilities
>Each Pokemon can learn ~4-5 Talents
>Unlike Abilities, Talents aren't hidden from opponent
It'd also be a great marketing opportunity.

Here's what I think it would look like! :D It's based on an undersea mine cuz it explodes, but it has the extra special mega flare to it like the other mega rocks!

That's really what it comes down to.
Golem has offensive movepool and typing, but a defensive stats and abilities.
Hard leaning into one by either giving it a better offensive ability or switching it's typing could make it great.
