Get people's numbers. Around Goldenrod and Ecruteak, you can get the Gen 1 stones occasionally from phone calls. You would know this if you played the games.

I've only played HGSS but there's a bug catching contest and once you get the national dex if you win you'll get a random evolution stone. Don't know if GSC has it though

so going to kanto is pretty cool but isnt it kinda just an empty victory lap? none of the gym leaders really increase in level compared to the elite four until you can get to blue and red. some are even lower level
