I think that one of main reasons was that the new games were released for the GBA, which several parents did not buy and instead bought a PS2 for their children. So then children my age started playing games like FIFA, Pro Soccer or GTA instead of Pokemon.
It was funny that I discovered years later that several of those children were still playing their old Pokemon games when they were 11 or 12. Then when smartphones came and the first emulators for them, they started playing gen I again when they were 18.
