I remember stuff like Livejournal communities for fan fic criticism that reacted to even pretty innocent self-insert fap fics in abject disgust, it's just that these were niche things and not everywhere like on Twitter with hypocrites now seemingly dictating what flies and what doesn't.
I remember a Tenchi Muyou fan fic named "Kanashii no Imi", that shit is older than I am and is probably lost forever now but I remember it clear as day, it was about some neck beard guy who got isekai'd to the universe of the series and ended up raping the loli character and suffering the consequences. Even when I first read it and I was just a teen with an anti-adjacent mindset I remember thinking "oh, people who read this shit and are all 'eww' about it didn't get the point, the author was just saying 'hey you, yes you who lewds the loli, this loser is you'" which is absolutely anti behaviour.
