Poor availability, sort of. There's a decent amount of options in the earlygame, but a good chunk of them are returning Pokemon. If you're trying to use something new you're limited to Starly/Shinx/Budew plus Buizel/Shellos after the first gym, and that's pretty much it. You can still make a unique team if you try.

There's not many good early stage pokemon so you end up leveling up with the few new ones you find in the early-mid routes

eh plenty of poeple use gible, and by time you reach that part you can use the gift togepi/eevee, bronzor, gligar, rotom, probopass, fossils, and ralts right afterward
