It then gets brought up several times in the anime during the Battle Frontier and Sinnoh seasons, how Ash has an innate ability to sense and utilize aura just like a Lucario. You know, the seasons where Ash never gets a Lucario of his own despite it being a huge shillmon in merch and promotional material. It was also why a lot of people suspected Ash would get a Mega Lucario in the XY anime, like the player does in the games.
To me, the aura thing is just like the GS ball. They brought in a cool plot point, decided not to do anything with it, and then eventually just shelved the whole concept entirely. Him getting a Lucario in the final tournament is too little too late.
