of course it was all meaningless because all pokemon mcs are nothing more than just self-inserts
at least red and gold had some interesting mysterious lore
i'd say the problem is not so much about ash himself, but the incompetency of the writing department who can't give him some decent progression
that is why i don't hate ash (he had good taste in humor), but i don't see much reason to defend him any more
