Kanto has a huge identity crisis because it doesn't have a real regional charm since it was the first game.
It's lackluster in many areas but along with the nostalgia, it's unique and funnily enough the most popular region

Kanto's charm is its urban anarchy + wild west atmosphere that got phased out of later gens as the series became more utopian. It's also more scifi than fantasy compared to the other gens. Genwun pokemon aren't gods of anything, just powerful creatures that can be understand and manipulated with good old-fashioned cellular biology. There's references to wars and real life locations like Brazil and America. It's actually the most unique gen IMO by virtue of coming out before all the lore and mechanics had been settled.

Kanto had plenty of character, it's just been distilled over the many revisits. it's become the bland, safe region but it wasn't always that way, it had a real rough and tumble urban vibe like the guy above described.

Unless you catch his sons, he is only a giant statue that does nothing. So, yeah, Snowpoint has nothing except annoying paths. Whoever thought being stuck in mud/snow was a good idea deserves a punch to the mouth. The game is slow, so let's make it more slow-er. Fuck that guy.

I think the snow and mud is a good thing, makes the game feel bigger and last longer. Even when you've played for hundreds of hours, there are still some routes that you've barely visited, maybe even only gone through once or only a few times. The snow and mud routes makes it so you can get the experience of exploring and seeing something you aren't overly familiar with even after countless hours of playing. There are still some areas that feel wild.

It takes a lot of inspiration from the Mother series too, but so do all the Pokemon games.

If you liked Akira, you might check out Genma Wars. It started the whole psychics in modern Japan genre AFAIK and you can definitely see its influence on all these other series.

This is why gen 1 lore and Kanto are my favourites. I just consume only the version of Pokemon lore that I like most and ignore all the new sterilized crap.
