I dislike ORAS a lot but one thing I think they definitely improved on is the Team Aqua designs. Now this a is a fucking PIRATE

idk I think the ORAS designs are too over the top cartooney. I can't take them seriously at all. I like the more grounded designs of the original. the left looks like an actual thug. the right is somebody that would never exist, it's just ridiculous. sometimes less is more.

I agree. The over-the-top cartooniness is a big problem with a lot of nu pokemon characters. Old designs had weight and realism to them even if they were clearly fantastical. I can suspend my disbelief and take old Aqua/Magma seriously as a group of dangerous criminals. New designs on the other hand just look like wacky cosplayers. No groundedness, no danger, just weirdos who look like they're about to do a circus act.

Yeah, I don't really like the ORAS redesigns that tend to be popular on here like May, Courtney and Zinnia. But, for example, Winona and Roxanne were improvements to me. But I never really care too much about character design in Pokémon games personally. I just wish they didn't change the story to revolve around megas.

Yeah, I do get what you mean. In this instance the over the top nature doesn't bother me but I can see how it'd be too much for someone who likes more grounded designs. I noticed that being a problem from ORAS especially, onwards. I didn't mind though, personally, since I find Teams Aqua and Magma kinda goofy to begin with.

I think that was the point, Aqua now look like pirates from a kids show like Lazy Town and Magma now look like nerds which is more suited to Maxie.

I feel that they are more in line with current Pokemon, yes the old versions are more realistic and threatening, but you have to accept "that Pokemon" is a thing of the past, it's like asking Disney to make movies with controversial themes again, it's simply not compatible with today, since the success of its anime in the West TPC opted for the family route and now tries to bury its more serious origin with Pikachu-shaped stuffed animals and cupcakes.

I mean, between Courtney and Matt, the only reason they remember him is because he is the roadblock that lets Archie run away. He also looks more like a biker rather than a sea man.

The grunt designs were definitely a downgrade. The admin designs are also worse overall but they were way too plain in the original game so it's not as bad that they gave them a little more flair.
