It wouldn't be Ritchie's decision, it'd be the ref's the same ref who later in the match declares a sleeping Pokémon "knocked out", meaning he's either's too stupid to understand the concept of extenuating circumstances or is intentionally sabotaging Ash, Meaning he almost certainly wouldn't postponed the fight even if Ash had asked.

The battle at the Viridian Gym was much more disappointing.
All this time Giovanni only appeared in the shadows, so in the big moment he doesn't even appear, it was an awful battle against Jessie and James.

The league was scummy as fuck and would've disqualified Ash while chiding him for "not being a good enough trainer" by implying that if he were truly capable of becoming a Pokemon Master, he should've had way more Pokemon in reserves that were fit for competing in the tournament that could act as safety nets while his current team was out of commission.

For the anime definitely, but the rest of the franchise was still trucking along until fad decay was accelerated massively by contemporary products like PS2 (officially starting the "Nintendo is for babies" consensus due to consolewars) and Yu-Gi-Oh (which benefitted from that new consensus and thus took up the mantle as the "cooler monster collector") hitting the scene, killing interest in both the video games and the trading card game, thus leaving Pokemon with nothing but its merchandise, now seen as exclusively for toddlers.

Charizard bullied Zippo into not fighting and would've mogged Sparky, but because it knew it was hot shit and could've swept Ritchie's team without breaking a sweat, it got complacent and lazy and decided to nap before finishing the job.
The ref quickly recognized Ash was just some lucky punk who had a Pokemon that was too good for him, and subsequently called it as "unable to battle" before he could be disingenuously carried through the rest of the tournament, completely killing the hype of the event for the spectators and the honorable nature of the sport for the competitors.

What killed Pokemania was kids growing up. It was natural death.
Actually, fact that Pokemon survived more than 1-2 years and turned into a mainstay of pop culture is kind of an exception for kid-related trends. Even post-Pokemon things specifically chosen to replace it lt like Beyblade and Yu-gi-oh! failed to get this big.
Still, the hype for Pokemon died when kids that grew with it left early elementary school and started being "too old" for it, just as with everything else. People trying to make some insane theories about why Pokemania dead are just stupid.

Nothing compares to Tobias, I heard a rumor a while ago that said his third Pokémon was a Mewtwo and that doesn't surprise me at all, I still haven't fact checked it because why wouldn't it be fucking Mewtwo, Tobias' only purpose in the show is to make sure Ash can't win the tournament.

I kinda figured Richie was meant to be a representation of the concept of other players you'd play the game with IRL. Basically Ash is "playing red" and Ritchie is "playing green". His design echoes the game Red design.
He's the anime equivalent to another player the viewer might encounter.

While the sleep rule is kind of bullshit, I think thematically speaking, Charizard costing the match makes sense. There were battles that CHARIZARD won, not Ash, but Ash got the acknowledgement because he was the Trainer even though Charizard didn't obey him. In terms of pure Gym Leader battles, Ash was given the badge out of a show of character more often than not. Very rarely did he get it out of skill. God help of the match got interrupted by Team Rocket or something else. But I wouldn't say Ash as he was back then was deserving of being Champion tier.

Ethan/Lyra time traveled with Celebi to stop Giovanni from answering Archer's call to action from Goldenrod (not that it would've helped him) and managing the Battle Tree fulltime with Blue is more of a job than it is a vacation.
Ash is still going on adventures, the anime just isn't following them anymore, I'm saying Red's have largely ended because he did the one thing Ash never did, he actually grew up.

Nah, it was definitely planned for him to win in Alola, Gen VII as a whole was the 20th anniversary Gen. The player becomes the region's first Champion, and Ash as a character has always been a representation of the male protagonist from the games. His original outfit is based on Red, his DP outfit is based on Lucas, his BW outfit is based in Hilbert, his XY outfit is based on Calem, and his SM outfit is based on Elio. This was also the Gen where they did the alternate Ash movies with the 20th movie I Choose You that focuses on Ash's connection to Ho-Oh, a sort of spiritual successor to the second movie, and a CG remake of the first movie. And of course Let's Go being a remake of Yellow.

The anime had declining viewership for years for a number of reasons, so I think that there were some long-term plans in place for how to retire Ash as a character.

He brought a faulty bazooka that occasionally carried him through situations to a match and it backfired on him so he lost. It's fair. A kid like that isn't Champion tier. Just because a bazooka is "the strongest weapon" doesn't mean he was capable of using it effectively.

But the difference is that the games always have a Champion, while you're the first in Alola. There's still the standard "Champion battle" against either Kukui or Hau, but it puts you in the position of doing title defense matches in the post-game. There's supposed to be more significance to this since it's the anniversary Gen. But they had a clear idea of what they wanted to do with Alain from the moment they introduced him. It's like they were trying to avoid a Tobias moment where they introduce him only during the League as a deus ex machina to defeat Ash, they tried to actually make a character. But they weren't going to let Ash win Kalos, but I have no doubt in my mind that they planned on having him win Alola from the planning stages.
