Finally got all the gold symbols. How did GF expect kids to complete this? If it wasn't because I know how to EV train I would've never gotten all the symbols.

Is the Battle Frontier really that much more difficult than completing Stadium 1 and 2?

There were already more high school and adult fans by the time Emerald was released compared to earlier years, and it was already older fans that had won the tournament they did before the Japanese Stadium game years before Emerald. I think this type of thing was designed to give them something to do since the Colosseum games were targeted more towards kids and medium-skill players again.

I would say yes.

What makes it so hard is that in order to get a gold symbol, you basically need to have an 100+ win streak without getting haxxed. The opponents will literally run shit like quick claw fissure which if they hit, there's literally nothing you can do. I had tons of streaks that I lost due to hax and had to start all over.

The bf does hint at EVs with that ribbon, and the ability to manipulate them via berries. The only real issue was IVs which were difficult to check in this game and by the time you are there you have caught your one time shit and rolled lati@s

like others said, it was meant to be grindy to extend the length of the game. and as a reward for top level players. they probably didn't expect everybody to get it. today there is this expectation that anybody should be able to 100% a game and complete all the content, but that wasn't really the philosophy back then.

another thing to consider is that the devs were still fairly amateur at this point, and simply weren't experts at balance. this was really their first time attempting post-game content on this scale too. Crystal had the Battle Tower, but this was way more ambitious. of course it was flawed. when you think about it, very few games that have high-level challenge content like this come out of the gate perfectly balanced. it requires a lot of playtesting to perfect these kinds of systems and devs are invariably going to have blindspots. but games with those kinds of skill ceilings were often on PC so they could be adjusted by balance patches as the devs got data on how real players interacted with their systems. or today, any game can be hit with a balance patch. but in 2004, you couldn't do that on the gameboy, what was shipped is what you got.

more balancing wasn't really necessary, just making the stat system transparent or including some info in your official guides would be enough. you did not need perfect IVs to beat this stuff (although they did include the rate in emerald so you could at least check if you wanted one or two), but without knowledge of EVs and natures you just have no shot. Simply telling players what they could do to improve their mons would have gone a long way, and of course including items to change natures or rework EVs would just be a bonus at that point -- it's insane how long GF took to do these things

I managed to do all the golds in emerald years ago and 4/5 in platinum. The gen 4 Battle Factory kept cheesing me with terrible starting picks around rounds 4 or 5 and I'd have to face Garchomps and better pokes right off the bat.

About your question, when I was a kid I loved the battle frontier and would talk with kids at school about getting to battle Brandon. I mostly played Pyramid, Pike, and Factory, only got silver symbols. Didnt know what EVs were.

That ribbon master site recommends a team of latios, suicune, and metagross, with metagross being swapped for your ribbon master. Latios will beat about 85% of the frontier by itself without even needing to swap out, and suicune will outlast almost anything that beats latios. The factory is the hardest facility by far simply because you have no control over what you bring in and are left to the whims of RNG. The same team still works in the gen 4 battle frontier too, just swap latios for garchomp.

Did you know you can encounter shinies in the frontier? It's beautifully tragic when it happens.

tecnically you can, but one, it's literally impossible to have a counter for everything, specially with obligatory intervals of 7, and two, the NPC are blessed with RNGsus while you are cursed in the same ammount, if by any chance you get -1 in pre/eva and/or the npc got a +1, you can kiss your streak goodbye

Doing it clean is a merit by itself. The Hoenn BF is a nightmare because it show how broken the game was at that point.

The RNG stuff is just bad luck, I've definitely had OHKO miss numerous times, hit through confusion, woke up sleep turn 1, etc. I've come back from a bad situation 1 v 3. If your plan and preparations only involve trying to sweep with your lead and completely fumbling if it goes down, no wonder you lost so much.
Lost my streak 6 times against the Factory, 10+ times against the tower (i think it's still going at 112), 6 times against the Arena (i forgot about Shedinja..... fucking twice.....) and some of those streaks were really high or AT the gold medal match.
Annabelle Latios was faster than mine but mine went first with Quick Claw, kek.

Only when rematching a trainer and they weren’t captured the first time around.
When you first battle a trainer, their shadow mon will generate specifically to not be compatible with the trainer’s ID for shininess, but since your ID is most likely different it could be shiny for you when caught.
In a rematch, the pokemon's data is the same but the trainer’s ID is different, so now it can be shiny for them. This also means that if it wasn’t shiny for you in the first match, it will never be shiny for you in the rematch even if it was shiny for the trainer.
TLDR: First match - can’t be shiny for opponent, can be shiny for you
Rematch - the opposite

Not necessarily. All the Frontier facilities use 3 mons in singles. You only need more if you go for doubles.
