it was barely marketed, it was released in the worst possible time (just after the Holiday Rush, wich BDSP stole), it only has a few months at most as the newest Pokemon Game because SV cut off its legs just before it could start running, no dual version scam to inflate sales, and no PvP to artificially extended its lifespan.

less marketing, overshadowed by BDSP, spinoffs perform historically worse than mainline games (inb4 "pla is mainline", it wasnt marketed that way and normies don't think of it that way) and even then a 2 million difference really isn't catastrophically bad, it did okay all things considered

Given the most recent updated sales data, I think the better question is why did BDSP sell like fucking garbage despite every advantage it could possibly have in comparison.

LPA was just sold on a less promising date than the end of the year before Christmas. Knowing that the double version increases the number of sales.
If among the 12,640,000 purchases, 1,500,000 have taken a second version, we are within sales standards.

Whoever made that ignored they did sell Blue version in Japan by the end of Gen 1, so its sales are split three ways. 10.35m is Gen 1's per version total.

Yellow was sold as "Special Pikachu Edition" in Japan, as it was tied to the anime and delivered to appease Nintendo when they missed GS's deliver date again. And it doesn't matter how many copies Blue sold, point was it got sold. Thus the average of Gen 1 is 10.35m, as it gets split between three.

Should have made 2 versions with minor differences and locked quality of life features behind a DLC pass. Also make sure to have exclusive OP Pokemon to transfer into future games that will dominate the competitive meta for years to come.

It sold about as well as LGPE and BDSP despite being an experimental game with an awkward release date and no two versions. No one in power was disappointed in its sales.

Now, PLZA will most likely get a typical release following a gap year. If it doesn't do at least well as PLA did, the disappointment will be warranted.
