Gen 1 didn’t have a starter who was obviously better than the others.
Gens 2-4 had only 1 starter who was obviously trash while the other 2 were about equals.
It wasn’t until Gen 5 when not only did they make the Unovan starts play obvious favorites with giving Serperior Contrary (yeah technically Gen 6 but its hidden ability was still in the data), but also retroactively played favorites for starters too.
They gave Venusaur, Feraligatr, and Blaziken the obvious best abilities of their respective trios.
Gen 6 then had the worst favoritism with Greninja getting Protean AND later Battle Bond.
Gen 7 Incineroar was absolutely the favorite but they at least tried with Primarina.
Gen 8 has a similar story to Gen 2-4 where Rillaboom and Cinderace both were given great stuff only for Inteleon to flounder.
surprisingly Gen 9 got completely even starters again. They gave all 3 starters a good ability and a good signature move too.
