I would like to remind you gentlemen that Gamefreak did the most future-proof bullshit in Sun and Moon by making parallel universes canon. This means that all continuities from Gen 7 onward, and even gens 1-6 retroactively, can all be canon, even when they contradict previous games.
I personally see PLA as a spin-off for a number of reasons that have likely already been brought up. But I can also see the argument for a mainline game if pokemon from Hisui can be transferred, or caught naturally in SV.
The thing I'd like to reiterate, is the canonization of Ultra Wormholes leading to different dimensions made it so that any criticism levied at the stories that Game Freak makes in the future can be instantly explained away as,
"different universe, bro".
And I think we can all try to agree that this simple fact has forever changed the perceived continuity of the games.
(And also creates a story-defense to the reasons why x game doesn't have y pokemon, or why a certain remake doesn't have a certain battle frontier: "different dimension, pokefans!")
And remember! The best pokemon game, subjectively, is pic rel. It is the compromise to end all genwars.
