It's actually something I appreciate about Gen 5 that it feels like "Gen 4.5", because it felt like an accumulation of everything up to that point - instead of stripping features away to try some new experimental thing, it just tried to polish the existing mechanics and add QoL features.
As for what did it bring to the franchise? It's a matter of taste whether you like the dex, but it brought a huge one, and every new batch since has either been small, or riddled with recolors, legend spam, and just bad designs.
For all its flaws, it gets by offending less than its successors, which I still think only continue and worsen the trends started by 5. This is talking campaign only - i hated the Gen 5 meta game and I enjoyed 6 more.
