I never played a Pokémon. I can play gens 1-4. What game should I start with?

I assume emulation or one of those cheap '3000 roms on a knockoff handheld from china'?

If just vanilla game, probably HeartGold or SoulSilver. It handholds a bit, but not in a bad way for a first game.

if you're only gonna play one, just pick whichever looks best between Emerald, Platinum, and Heartgold/Soulsilver.
if you plan to play multiple, start with Firered Leafgreen, then Emerald, Platinum, HGSS.
I would just stick to Gens 3 & 4 unless you're really interested in the retro games for curiosity's sake, but most people are probably gonna have more fun with the remakes these days.

doesn't make sense to be able to emulate Gen 4 but not 5, so I'm assuming the latter lol

Go in order, see for yourself how the games progressed and appreciate each experience for what it is without getting spoiled by later improvements making the previous games feel more tedious for lacking them. Third versions are the most feature complete so if you're only going to play one game per gen then go with those, otherwise look up version exclusive pokemon and play which ever version has the ones you're looking for. Best way is getting a friend or two to play the other version(s) and trade/battle each other along the way so you can get the full intended experience.

If you've never played the first four games yet have the ability to, why not just play them in order?
Really, I'll never understand people who have to ask the order in which to play/read something - you start from the beginning like a sane person. You shouldn't have to be told that.

To be fair, some stuff gets retarded with the release order not being the most coherent way to go, or different regions getting stuff out of order or skipping or renaming entries for some stupid reason. Like Final Fantasy 3 not getting a western release until the ds remake, Discworld being several different book series in a trenchcoat and the order not really mattering, or old shows having the production order vs air date order and sometimes even factoring in spinoffs/movies/tie-in media - I've seen different box sets of the same shows swap episodes around and I have yet to see a single streaming service put Stargate SG1 in dvd order let alone account for the overlap with Atlantis so newcomers fully understand everything when the plots cross over. Pokemon definitely is not one of those though.

Yeah, I've encountered a lot of stuff like this. Fortunately Pokemon is pretty easy and makes sense played in order, but also works fine if you just jump in anywhere.
