I don't know if it was to avoid trouble, but they should have embraced the idea of a wild child in its entirety like they did with Koko, it would have been fun to see the series through the eyes of a wild Iris, concepts like Pokeballs, Battles, Evil Teams, Pokemon Centers, Regions, transportation, social norms, and more. Same for Ash arriving in a foreign region without knowing the culture or the language, it would have been more interesting than just being a Kanto reskin.
