I found XY to be the perfect compromise between over-world 3D models, and in-battle portraits.
The chibi models weren't a head to body ratio of 1:1, so you could have more detail, but they were still compact enough to make the world feel big.
In general, I prefer sprites. Pokemon, trainers, all of it. But I might be in a minority. S/M moved onto full 3D models, but the art direction was still good.
SwSh had... similar art direction? But then the 3D models for SV feel like, i don't know, dolls? They're a bit uncanny.
I'll get shit on for praising XY for ANYTHING, but I liked it's post-sprite compromise, and I think we should go back.
