Gyrardos hits harder than Feraligatr and they took away the Ice Punch TM that would've made Feraligatr the better choice. Plus you'll need Surf regardless to get the Gyarados

Real question honestly is why was Houndour not moved so we could have a genuinely good Fire type instead of the rapist

Growlithe has a shit learnset and learns most decent moves way too late with the exception of flamethrower.

Arcanine's learnset is almost nonexistent

So that's why most will simply roll with Typhlosion.

if you have a lv30 Gyarados trained from a lv5 Magikarp, and then caught a lv30 Gyarados, wouldn't the one you trained generally have better stats in HG/SS due to the EVs it gained from the Pokemon it fainted in order to level up?

typhlosion has real fire moves at a reasonable time and better spatk than arcanine
meganium naturally gets screens and recovery so even if its really passive it enables even more turning off your brain

Yeah but it's out of the way compared to how convenient it was in GSC. It made [REDACTED], Feraligatr and Ampharos a shitton more fun. Gyarados in HGSS meanwhile is just a fucking offensive beast monster. Gen IV was Gyarados' best generation in general, so it really outshines Feraligatr even if Gen IV was Feraligatr's best Gen too
