Honestly much the same
The main thing that switches is that Gen 3 is definitively alone, where as currently it's often just lumped with the DS games.
The jump in consoles often accompanies a massive change in the franchise, so there's really not a whole lot of stuff like "Gen 6 was awesome, but Gen 7 was TERRIBLE".

it always bothered me how you can't trade or transfer back pokemon between games, only gsc let you do that

you send them to Home, an app that you pay a monthly subscription for, and then can send them to whatever other game from Home.
However, each Pokemon is marked with which games it can go back to, and it's a clusterfuck.
