I hate how bright and flashy all sprites look in gen 3. I know the GBA had a weak backlight so they had to brighten up the sprites for it, but man a lot of pokemon that were supposed to look dark just look goofy.

Cloyster is even worse. We are supposed to not know what its body looks like, but aside from Gen 1~2 sprites, it is clearly a black/purple ball and not a shadow obscuring its appearance.
It seems to be a Sugimori problem with conveying the concept since it was present since his original art as shown in >>56691165
, but eventually the game portrayal followed his art instead of the other way around (a shame in those particular cases, but in 95% was a positive thing as Gen1 pokémon mostly looked like shit in the games)

You can see the reflection present in its very first sprite, it's definitely meant to be a pearl from the beginning

Now that I think about it, maybe it was not his limitation but just that they only provided him the sprites and nothing else.
If he only had the sprite to work with, it would be understandable to mistake Cloyster for a black pearl instead of a hidden creature.

What’s under Diglett and Tangela, what are your fav fan interpretations?
We see an evolution line of the latter in Gen 2, so they probably had some concept of that.

What if by "innards" they mean the insides of its body, like how the average human will rarely, if ever, see real human bones.
