There's plenty else wrong with Reborn, Shelly is just a very easy example where any excuse that can be given just loops back into itself eventually because it's an endless chain of "X is okay though because you get Y, except Y is countered by Z, which in turn anything you do to address Z gets you hit by X" and I find the way much of the fangame community pretends this is good game design frustrating.
With that said, Reborn did have a lot of great QoL shit, the interface is great, and when it does actually let you have access to pokemon it tends to do so in a way that was legitimately great, the idea of acquiring pokemon in the world through little events and having those be different each time is a great idea, [and any pokemon game that gives me an easy Slurpuff is good] and I wish that was the aspect more games copied, not the mechanical design or the "literally had to be told that including someone's dad's suicide in game was insane by SomethingAwful of all places to remove it" writing.
Anyway in more fun topics, I will say that I'm enjoying Unbound's 'mon selection so far at least. Access to a decent set of ghosts, parts for a diverse Sandstorm team [being able to have fucking sandstorm early at-fucking all], Ice, and Fire types like this is actually pretty great and I'm also seeing a fair few decent poison types so I could do a mono-poison run if I wanted to pass up on "just have a Tyranitar" or the like.
Normally a decent selection of fire types, if any, is a mid-game thing because the games fear giving them to you, same with having even "a" ghost period and fuck having any ice types to work with or the parts for a good sandstorm team until endgame.

Look it's Gym fucking 1 and the bad guys have already caught 2/3 of the legendaries they were after and while the writing isn't *bad* persay so far the pacing is kinda whack as fuck. I get that they foreshadowed the "The monster dudes aren't immune to electric" thing so odds are Zapdos is gonna bust out but 1st gym, bad guys are 2/3rds of the way to their initial goal is weird. But even more so is the dude had two goons, sic'd them on this little Gary looking bastard just as I was catching up and I figured "Oh a double battle" and then instead of that happening another fag showed up and just kinda pushed Not!Gary aside and said he'd hold him off so I figured "okay I'm gonna fight that dude" but nah they all just kinda...fucking left.

If you're here for some cringey shit and historic relevance though, going through Snakewood is a rite of fucking passage almost. It turns into a demented JRPG plot pretty quickly to its own detriment but its insanity is pretty fun, even if IMHO the early attempt at edgy moodiness, scavenging for pokemon/pokeballs and fighting zombies was unironically a lot more charming.

Personally, I'd just scrub the entire Dragon subplot and some of the other "this was clearly added on impulse or because the guy making the hack felt retarded that day" shit and focus on just the general pokeball scarcity outside of stocking up at a few points, maybe use the whole zombie apocalypse thing as an excuse to have a few populations shift around, to make the availability more unique and otherwise just uptune the mechanics to more modern ones.
Just flooding the game with either OUs or a bunch of literal trashmons and cranking up the levels/slanting the fight in the computer's favor is piss easy and it's never been impressive.
