it didn't matter what language you spoke at home, if you studied the classics and were well versed in history, literature and language, you were considered "greek"
before the modern concept of nation state solidified, your religion was considered the main defining factor, hence why the population exchange with turkey was not based on language, but rather on wether you followed the greek orthodox church or not
