I did see the harkness test but I still don't think this applies. I'm referring specifically to trainer/pokemon relationships where they capture pokemon for the purposes of battle. It feels like there would be a huge power dynamic there, or maybe im looking into the word "capture" too much.

to be fair, catching pokemon for battle is not the default. it's catching pokemon for a friend. some people train them for battles, others for contests, and some like me only have pokemon for life assistance.
it's a really fucking weird situation, but there's much worse things going on.

There's in-game statements concerning the history of Pokeballs and how people simply befriended Pokemon before their invention. Also in multiple media spanning the franchise it's suggested that Pokemon have to be willing in order to be captured by Pokeballs, which mainly serve as a method of housing and encourage rest when the Pokemon is inside one.

this implies people NEED to both keep pokemon in pokeballs AND that you need to hurt them in order to catch them.
I gotta be honest, all of my pokemon I was able to catch was purely through trust and patience or were obtained from eggs from friends and family.
it's not necessary to do that, even the guy posting above you says about this.
