She existed solely to orbit Ash's disinterested dick, and that held true for roughly a third to half of the XY series. By that point, they realized how flat her character was, and so scrambled to give her something else...by having her focus on contests as a blatant retread of Dawn, who was in turn a retread of May. To add insult to injury, all of her performances were ultimately just spinning, but characters in the anime made it a point to claim she was talented regardless. Her famous "kiss" accomplished absolutely nothing, and was never brought up again; not even when the character returned in Journeys.
Serena is, in essence, a master class in how not to write a character.
