The new features (especially in comparison to Gen 1) and improvements (breeding, held items, day/night cycle, weather, more unique battle themes, special split, two new types, animated sprites in Crystal's case) and the fact that you can visit two regions (yes, even if they had to make Kanto more barebones to fit everything into the cartridge) as well as battle their respective gym leaders.
There's no point discussing the rest or saying you can love Gen 2 while acknowledging it has flaws. Not only is it all purely subjective, but you'll just keep having a melty and throw "noooo you're just wrong it's dogshit" at every opportunity.
