is it worth it?
considering getting it for the sake of a different take on the game, as i heard, and i enjoy completing the pokedex and apparently this version doesn't require trading(?)

I gotta be honest. don't listen to the people who wanna turn this into a genwar, the game is really fun, but don't pay more than $50 for it. if you can find it for like $40-45, that's a good price.

the cons are obvious; "flying" pokemon doesn't actually fly, there's really only one town, no real "gyms", and to some the colours and aesthetic can look muddy

but the pros are worth it. probably the magnum opus for pokemon's worldbuilding, the cutscenes are amazing, the lore is great (not teraleak level insane but still great), it incentivises you to complete the dex, and the gameplay loop is actually really fun.

sure, people call it a "tech demo", but every pokemon game nowadays is such. gen 6 was a tech demo for gen 7, gen 7 was a tech demo for gen 8, the list goes on.

It's relaxing and fun. It feels good to interact with wild pokemon and the environment in ways more immersive and fluid than the other 3D games. It's still limited and the novelty wears off after some hours but it's not aggravatingly boring like some recent releases.

Yeah I'll just second this.
The tech demo thing is certainly true but the idea its bad is just a misnomer; its mostly a solidified gameplay loop with okay fluff.
The lack of bulk of real content definitely makes it feel like it should be lower price though yeah.

This game gets alot of hate from niggerfaggots so I'll do my best to actually provide you with an answer. I bought this game because Ruby was my last game, I got GO a year ago and liked it so much that I wanted to get back into playing the games again, & PLA was the closest mechanically to GO. Infact, PLA & GO are the same game.

I'm enjoying it. Sometimes it feels a little grindy but nobody is forcing you to complete the pokedex and SwSh was worse in that regard. Fighting has mainly been reduced to type advantages, so that's disappointing. It's obvious the goal is to just capture pokemon and fulfill most of the entries in the pokedex. Also it feels slow as hell but all games do imo.

you don't need to complete each entry for that
if you do complete each entry, you will get the shiny charm

To be fair there is completing the dex and COMPLETING the dex. You can complete without doing all the tasks and should be easy enough but if you want higher shiny chances and a perfect dex then you will suffer a bit. I hate the magikarp dex on this one holy shit that's the worst one by far.

There's no trading (other than connecting to home) so all the pokemon in the dex can be obtained in the game, there's a few mythicals that unlock by having save data from other games but they're not needed for completion. A few are a bit tedious or require a bit of luck such as the spiritomb quest or certain ones that only show up during a certain random event, but for the most part it's pretty reasonable.
The main thing is that "completing" the dex in it doesn't just mean catching one of each, they all have certain tasks associated with them that you need to do to "complete" their entry, such as seeing them use certain moves, giving them food, defeating wild ones, evolving them, etc.
