I was thinking about this a while back when the gen 5 stuff leaked but like. where are these designs from? they clearly saw SOMETHING.
Drilbur, Alomomola, Galvantula, and Cofagrigus were all "leaked". fake or not, it's genuinely insane that they got this accurate.
like, this might just be some form of mental retardation and I haven't figured something out about this yet, but like.. you guys understand my confusion, right?

some pokemon were already partially revealed by the trailer but they were still a mystery so people made up the front of cofagrigus or galvantula

where's alomomola in this? was the coincidence that strong for luvdisc being so shit that people wanted to give it a fan evo? or did something reveal that made people think it? gives me vibes of those old-ass "happa" drawings from a while back.

I'm just gonna say it, BW's whole quasi-reboot thing and avoidance of old Pokemon was a mistake. I get what they were trying to do, and it was kind of cool, once. but the novelty wore off really quickly and ultimately I think the generation would be better received if it hadn't done that. Gen 3 did a way better job at doing the soft-reboot thing, by putting a big focus on the new Pokemon, but still sprinkling in a few old ones where it was appropriate (as opposed to Gens 2 & 4 which leaned heavily on previous generations).
it just gives the world more consistency, and some Pokemon fill such specific niches in the game that if you remove them, you have to compensate for it. which is why I think Gen 5 ended up with so many Pokemon that were kind of analogous to older generations. I think they realized this going forward and from then on have used regional forms/convergents etc to revisit old design tropes without making entirely new Pokemon. if they had that idea a little earlier, I think Pokemon like Bouffalant would have been a regional Tauros, for example.

I'm suprised gen 3 only had 2 cross gen evolutions with Azurill and Wynaut. Pokemon like Macargo and Skarmory would have felt very natural to get evolutions in Hoenn, I know remakes don't add new pokemon species but I wish ORAS had some cross gens evolutions. The Mega were the games marketing tool but many of them you don't even get to use before postgame

Gen 3 did the analogous to older mons right with Feebas and Milotic, while based on Magikarp and Gyarados they each complement the other without taking each others niche
Had Gen 5 kept those old pokemon in mind while creating the new ones to act as complementary counterparts instead that served it's own purpose

Quite a few people thought Alomomola would be a cross-gen evo for Luvdisc, because we'd just had a generation that introduced the concept for several Pokemon that needed them. Luvdisc is one of the worst Pokemon ever created, and Alomomola is also a pink heart-shaped fish, so such expectations were reasonable at the time.
