I think GF should cover all of the parts of Japan before going overseas.

Even if the next gen isn't Japan, i'm sure they'll find a way to use some nippon-inspired place just like they did with Kitakami

Also after the leaks we now know that if they wanted to use those places they could have changed the map's designs like they did for Pasio.

Galar in general just feels like a theme park version of Britain because the cities and landscape are nothing like reality. Since gen 5, GF has been putting forests, deserts, and tundra wherever on the map with no logic whatsoever. Sure, Hoenn and Sinnoh also had some of that, but Hoenn had sensible geography based on the central volcano and mountain divide and Sinnoh had its snowy region in the north with desert relegated to a tiny post-game route on a separate landmass. Meanwhile, Galar has tundra in the south, the wild area's patchwork biomes in the center surrounding by the more normal plains and hills, and then throws not-London in the far north. If someone sad the Galar map is oriented with South at the top, it would honestly make more sense. Which I guess would make the Isle of Armor the stand-in for Ireland, although it's yet another all-in-one nonsense landscape.

I think the only interesting part of Japan left would be the Izumo region, because there's a lot of ancient history there that is distinct from the conventional Japanese narrative.
Otherwise the rest of Japan is fairly bland.

The issue is that while Izumo might be historically interesting and have some cultural importance, the region itself is geographically kinda simple.

Nothing really to put there that you don't already see in Kanto or Johto.
Sinnoh is cold. Hoenn is subtropical. Those give them unique characters.

The Kyoto/Kansai region would be fun, but they basically already did it in Johto. The 'old, religious, and spiritual' thing is Kyoto's shtick, IRL, but Johto's in-game.
Izumo is even older and more religious so it at least has some room for unique character.
The Shikoku island area is meh.

That being said, it's true that it is hard to imagine a new japanese region showing a never before seen part of japan that can be used in a game with TPC's target audience. For example the japanese working class is something very specific to their territory, but i find it hard to believe it would fit a Pokemon game.

I think they should split the over seas regions into parts like they did with Japan to better milk the region more like unova that is based on New York City and alona that is based on the Hawaiian islands and build from there make games about countries but base it around said state that the game is currently happening in. The fact that Paldea is based on two different countries is what I was talking about. The details like the giant crater and a different subject entirely.
It makes sense for Portugal to be in Paldea because there are no natural boundaries separating Portugal from Spain except for a river in the far south. That river and all major rivers in Portugal all flow from Spain, and Lisbon itself is connected to Madrid by the Tagus river. So Portugal is even more connected to Spain than Spain’s own regions which are separated from each other by mountain ranges.

The developers were told to not use any IRL location as inspiration for the map and to not consider Pasio part of the world. The mails leaked not so long ago, i have tried to summarize it but you can read it for yourself - it shouldn't be hard to find, i'm sure you saw the early Pasio map based on Italy since there have been many threads about it.

I don't think we'll ever know, but it is worth noticing that the Rangers series has a connection to the mainline.
We only know for certain this policy was being used during the Pokemon Master's pitch and since then the only spin-off based on a IRL location was New Pokemon Snap (with Pokken being the last based on Japan but the creation of the game predates the leaked pitch).

The distinction between trainers and rangers up to that point was never made in the mainline series, where rangers are just another trainer class.

thats how they used to do it, regions weren't supposed to condensing an entire country into it, arguably the regions that were based on smaller areas (as seen in picrel) are the most fully realized.

Unova is probably their most fantasy style region, shit like Chargestone Cave & the Dragonspiral Tower is pretty different from anything else in the series. The only thing that REALLY feels out of place is the massive desert.
Kalos drops the fantasy elements and certainly isn't as good as Gens 1-4 but it doesn't feel too weird apart from, again, the massive desert outside the major city.
Alola has the benefit of being an archipelago and I do think it's a pretty well designed region, but yea Galar & Paldea stink.

Remember shit like Floaroma Town? or Village Bridge? or Pacifidlog Town? These are all relatively insignificant parts of the game and yet most people remember them, whereas now most people can't even remember more than 1 or 2 towns in the games.

If you are creating an interesting setting for an RPG, you're not going to choose San Diego. Especially if you have the US as a whole to pull from.
Neither would you choose Hiroshima.
Both are big cities without a lot of unique character. Hiroshima was nuked once, San Diego is on the border with Mexico. None of that makes either all that remarkable or culturally valuable.

What can you pull from Hiroshima to create a unique setting for a Pokemon game with?
What sets it apart from Kanto or Johto or Sinnoh or Hoenn?

Evil team is a group lead by a descendant of the last daimyo of the region trying to separate by any means possible. There main base is the castle there. The castle is a unique asset, the Sukkei garden and Hondori street might as well be from Unova, lol. Or New Mauville in Hoenn for Hondori street.

Old temples, Johto. Shopping center, Unova/Hoenn, Cityscape, Kanto.

There's nothing actually unique about Hiroshima. And a non-Pokemon style plot isn't unique to it, either.

Galar isn't "tundra at the north", you can literally see in the map you posted that Wyndon and the areas around it are greener than the south. Circhester and the area around it are cold because it's mountainous not because of latitude.

The regions don't match their real life scale. Johto and Kanto are roughly the same size as eachother, and so are Kansai and Kanto in real life, but Johto covers almost the entirety of Kansai + a significant portion of Shikoku whereas Pokemon's Kanto only covers the southern half of the real-life Kanto, so you would expect Kanto to be about half the size of Johto, but they just scaled Kanto up to match Johto instead.

This is one of my main issues too. It felt especially prominent in Galar but it really started ramping up in Alola. But the Galar mons felt kinda memey and a bit too on the nose for my liking. Paldea toned it down a little back to the Alola dex tier of stereotyping, but we're not out of the woods.

They'll never do a good Western European region, it's as simple as that. There's too much of a cultural gap for it to not just be stereotypes. It's why Alola and Unova were slightly less stereotypical since there's at least some cultural familiarity due to the Japanese immigrants in real life New York and Hawaii

All those places are smaller than any IRL inspiration used for mainline jap regions.
Oshima is literally part of the Hokkaido but it was never used for Sinnoh since at best they could have put a town in the south west part of the map. Instead they used it as a whole region in a spin-off.

Or keep it to their Asian sphere of influence, maybe Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, forced Singapore map placed in a bigger region, and even their tsundere gf Korea. Those countries are pretty weeb and Pokemon consumers. Asia in general seems nice, maybe we'll get a break from ugly westoid tumblr characters too. A game within a Chinese or Chinese + Korea as region basis would probably be a challenge between numerous efforts to avoid controversies, censuring and offending them without also getting critics by westoid anti-chinese for being to submissive.
Dragonball was probably the only franchise where even China officials have thanked its Japanese author for its contribution.

Rangers spinoff regions at best can match the islands map and some landscapes but no the actual vibes or whole own gen regional quirks and customs. Sort of like Kanto barely reminds you of Tokyo.

I think it's fine that they wanted to take a break from Japan, but I'd have liked them to keep up the trend by keeping new regions based on parts of countries, not based on entire countries like Kalos and Galar were.

Oshima is just my mom's generic small volcano island made cartoonish, that's nothing unique in Japan as the Japanese mainland is still a volcano island like many other places in Asia.
Pretty sure there are onsen next to any volcano in Japan. Hoenn already did it with bigger archipelago islands.
