The anime finale would have been vastly improved if instead of Ash vs Leon, it was Ash vs Gary, with Gary causing a major upset in the semifinals by defeating Leon

Gary was a better rival for Goh in Journeys than he was for Ash in Indigo/Johto. Through both teasing and harsh words, he pushed Goh to grow. The Gary/Goh rivaly was one of the better things to come out of Journeys and we needed more of it.
As Ash's rival, he pretty much sucked.

I think people just misremember stuff from the anime with the games. That's why they meme Gary so much. He didn't appear that much. All his appearances are a spectacle.
I doubt most kids watched all the episodes.

The anime formula was not yet built back then, which makes it kind of unique. Imagine the unreachable, arrogant, and seemingly superior rival plot device getting hyped for an entire season only to lose at the top 24(?) of the biggest tourney in the country before the main character has actually ever fought him in a legit match. It was uncharted territory from then on.

But that's the thing, Gary was defeated in it BEFORE Ash. Ash got further than Gary did. It showed that the League contestants aren't fucking around and Ash had to get serious if he wanted to stay in it.

Have Ash vs Gary before Charizard's arc, have Charizard be a dipshit to cause the match to be thrown, then afterwards, Gary approaches Ash, Ash bristles for the "you suck" from Gary, but Gary just asks to see Charizard, then tells Ash what the issue is and how to fix it.

The early signs that Gary cares less about being the best than he does about understanding Pokemon

gary oak served his purpose perfectly, he was the representation of ash if ash wasn't a total fuck up at the beginning. shallow and over confident, treating pokemon as a path to glory rather than developing strong bonds of loyalty and friendship with them over time. in the games gary oak falls into place and stays as a 'big fish in a small pond' by becoming the eigth kanto gym leader, the anime choosing not to use gary oak moving forward works perfectly according to the character lore.

what people misremember is that you enter the town for about 20 steps before getting ambushed, the pokemon center is located further to the right and all three of the towns prior to this were entered moving south to north. it's 100% possible to mistakenly walk past the house and take the left hand corner, especially if you just explored the house and went into the backyard. you don't "leave town" without going to a pokemon center because a kid in 1996 had no idea wtf the pokemon center was located, all the knew is that they entered a town and the only dangerous areas in the game are grass/gym/caves so it was it was safe to explore. then comes gary oak to send you and your low hp under-leveled team packing to the last pokemon center you used, which was just outside of mt moon. people who claim this situation is impossible unless you were borderline retarded more than likely first experienced kanto through generation 3 and not in 1996 on a handheld from 1989 with a screen the size of a postage stamp that had a bizzare yellowish green fart tint on everything.

The ashnime is pretty bad when you think about it. Yes, even season 1
It has some great episodes and it was a fantastic commercial for the games and that's about it. Otherwise it's 80 episodes of mostly boring battles, lots of """fillers""" (in the sense that nothing memorable happens. After Sabrina it's 50%fillers) and the characters are misused.

Compare that to some other kid animes like digimon and ygo and the difference is obvious.

That being said. Watching pokemon at the height of pokémania + having the games will never be replicated again. You had to be there

I don't see what Gary's undignified defeat has anything to do with Ash's undignified defeat. Both washed out at the League, Gary was defeated by a no-name opponent and Ash by the ref changing the rules on the fly.
