Japan has always been more anti-homosexual then the Western world does, and the fact that Westerners actually think Japan tolerated homosexuals, because they see a "homosexual" relationship in a 1980s anime, just reminds me of how Westerners literally are unable to segregate fiction from fantasy. Even as late as 2001, being an open homosexual was 10000x more accepted and tolerated in the West then it ever was in Japan, but Westerners think this was not the case because Westerners did not portray homosexuals in family media, but the Japanese "did" in their anime.
Because they cannot segregate fiction from fantasy and think depictions of something in Japanese media is some sort of "advocacy" for it in real life. No wonder they get offended by all the rape and lolicon Japanese hentai, they think it was "advocacy" of it in real life.
