That's probably the only correct way of going about it if they plan on keeping Pokemon a JRPG. Having the main story be largely linear but offer lots of side areas to explore at the player's leisure. Gen 3-5 mostly got this design right in concept, Gen 1-2 were part of the way there but between GameFreak having less experience and lots of problems they fucked it up at bit, and while Gen 6-7 attempted it occasionally they did it shockingly badly almost every time with Alola being the less bad example but also having the worst single segment (fuck the second island it is garbage).

Xenoblade maps have a great sense of scale and exploration with lots of landmarks to find and powerful enemies to fight while still being a linear adventure. It'd be like classic Pokemon routes modernized.

I would strongly prefer Elden Ring map design, but I know that's asking for a lot.

>mons are placed intelligently in areas that would make sense instead of just randomly spawning dotting the field at all times, giving you space between them to breathe but never being too far either

As much as I like xenoblade, at least aesthetically the answer is no. I'm already not a fan of the extremely over the top / stupid architecture of new pokemon games like gen 8 power plant / battle tower. Gen 9 school, etc. and would much rather pokemon worlds try to look mostly like real, grounded locations.
Game design wise I think if would be fine of course, though I'm not sure pokemon could support it since they're 10 hour jrpgs instead of proper 60+ hour jrpgs
