Starmie was popular if you had competitive autism. Rapid spin, really good speed up till recently and okay SpA made it pretty good.
Could also do dumb semi stall due to scald. It just died to powercreep, its bulk is middling, its SpA can't compete and everyone and their mother is coked up on higher speed than it.

The one that shocked me the most was the fall of Jolteon. Back in the day, Jolteon was not only the most popular eeveelution, but also the most common electric type used by casual players. Nowadays, you'll hardly ever see Jolteon at all.

Pokemon used to be popular with young boys. Jolteon was the epitome of cool and thus the most popular.

Nowadays? Pokemon is popular with grown men, a significant portion of which are into pokephilia, and women

That's why the most popular eeveelutions are now the cutest and most "fuckable" ones
Jolteon has spikes which means you can't cuddle or fuck it without hurting yourself

At the height of pokemania poliwhirl was everywhere. It was even front and center on the infamous time magazine pokemania cover. I think the boomer marketers were really enamoured by its design back then. Very unusual for a mid-stage evolution to be that popular.

In general the dogs were decently popular, maybe Raikou fell off at some point but I'm pretty sure they weren't exactly nobodies.
Feel like Skarmory also counts. Ampharos I feel like i've seen a decent amount of remembering.

Heracross is hm. Steelix/Kingdra i feel like are remembered. Wooper also. Actually just cross referencing, I'm pretty sure gen 2 is still at the point i've seen casuals remember a large chunk of it.
Compared to gen 3 onwards. Delibird, Smeargle, Celebi. Gen 2 is actually a pretty allstar cast.

Like I think the most common issue isn't "people don't remember gen 2 pokemon" its "casuals can't remember what the fuck even is in gen 2". Like obviously even if you asked a casual what their favorite gen 2 mon their ass probably will only remember like Lugia/starters even if they remember a bunch of other mons.
So much of gen 2s general roster are basically core members that are just used wherever in later games and the game they come from doesn't exactly use them well even if you did remember the games.

You get the sense that no one really cares about gen 2 because when you start playing gen 2 and see your first johtomons, it's all mostly literal whos like Sentret/Furret and Aipom and laughingstocks like Ledyba
Seeing the cool stuff like Heracross, Skarmoy, Gligar, Hondour, etc requires you to either go out of your way or make it to the end of the game

if this had been reversed and kantomons were the rare finds in johto it would have made the Kanto part of the game much more memorable because it would almost be an entire new pokedex to catch. As it is now it's simply an extension of johto with the same stuff you've seen all game and a lackluster boss rush. Real missed opportunity to shill a whole 'nother generation of merchandise, since I remember young me being fascinated by every new johto pokemon I saw.

Gengar dropped because it was the power creep. Gamefreak took away Levitate because getting a free switch for its Mega was retard powerful, and Gengar being UU is because Smogon banned its Mega to Ubers on sight after what it did in Gen 6. Poor thing never had a chance after that.

Yeah, Jolteon was the posterboy for "cool" eeveelution, but it got mogged super hard by Umbreon. Espeon was also eclipsing Jolteon popularity to an extent. Japan loved Sylveon which also plummeted Jolteon popularity

Tyranitar will always be good wherever sand is relevant; that people are not using him now is more due to people using booster energy rather than sun teams, also the Archaludon ban. If not for those Tyranitar would be the anti-meta king and it's still pretty good in spite of them anyway
