It was just an element of early characterization from when the anime was much faster and looser and not "the face of the franchise that's selling countless toys to kids across the globe" that was quickly dropped when they realized Ash wasn't going to retire anytime soon, and they needed to sanitize him to be appealing to a global market and a revolving door of toddlers who literally weren't even born yet when Giselle's one-time appearance happened.
