strategy guides. or, just looking it up on the internet. it's not like the internet didn't exist in 2006. idk, it wasn't the 90s anymore, information spread around pretty easily. I doubt very many people played this game in a total vacuum. if you didn't have access to any supplementary material or the internet for whatever reason, you probably at least had friends you could ask. I don't recall ever being confused about this kind of this when I played as a kid.

It’s not essential to the game, like crouching with a red orb in Castlevania 2. You’re supposed to look it up in supplementary material or ask your schoolyard friends who knew. The two rocks, pokerus, azure flute which didn’t even exist, this was all super common knowledge.

Everyone with a functioning brain understood you had to crouch with a red orb in Castlevania 2 because you have to crouch with a blue orb at an earlier dead end and you're specifically told to go to that cliff with a red orb.
