movement and battles were really noticeable coming from the snappy Gen III engine.
Also, like myself, a lot of people from the Pokemania period either fell off here or during Gen 3. So it's a blind spot for the pokemania generation, until they went to highschool/college and didn't care that others thought it was a baby game for gay babies.
And then everyone got back into it again, Either with Platinum, HGSS, or BW.
But even still, I don't think they're hated, per se.
