what people misremember is that you enter cerulean city for about 20 steps before getting ambushed, the pokemon center is located further to the right and all three of the towns prior to this were entered moving south to north. it's 100% possible to mistakenly walk past the house and take the left hand corner, especially if you just explored the house and went into the backyard. you don't "leave town" without going to a pokemon center because a kid in 1996 had no idea wtf the pokemon center was located, all the knew is that they entered a town and the only dangerous areas in the game are grass/gym/caves so it was it was safe to explore. then comes gary oak to send you and your low hp under-leveled team packing to the last pokemon center you used, which was just outside of mt moon. people who claim this situation is impossible unless you were borderline retarded more than likely first experienced kanto through generation 3 and not in 1996 on a handheld from 1989 with a screen the size of a postage stamp that had a bizzare yellowish green fart tint on everything.

I think a big part of that is how hard it is to hit super effective damage against Fire/Water/Grass Pokemon early on in gen 1. Early Flying types don't learn flying moves until super high levels and the only Pokemon who can hit water for SE early on is Pikachu if you happened to get one in the forest. You do get Geodude to deal with Charmander after Mount Moon, though.

More recent games have better type diversity early on, so the starter matchup isn't nearly as big of a deal. You can usually capture water/grass/fire Pokemon on the first couple routes nowadays.

One thing I noticed when I played Pokemon Blue earlier this year is how move diversity, especially in the early game, is gimped to shit. Oneshots don't really start happening until at much higher levels.

RBY is a perfectly balanced old school RPG
It's a broken competitive game because it's so easy to hack the system but otherwise it conveys the feeling of starting with shitmons with shit moves and ending with powerful kaijus super well

Rivals don't pick the starter strong to your anymore because they now always know a move of their type from the get go. They would obliterate you in your very first battle if they picked it.

An area with no wild pokemon and just about every other battle is optional.

honestly, i think they could still pull off the dipshit, happy-go-lucky rival personalities with this occurring. getting effortlessly beaten by someone who laughs it off like we're best buddies would infuriate me to no end and make me want to work towards wiping that dipshit smile off their face for the rest of the game, even if i beat them in the very next fight i have with them.

If that Mudkip were faithful to its level-up moves in ORAS, it would know Growl AND Water Gun.
But you know what? It doesn't. Because they want you to be able to actually beat it.
Instead of making it so your rival always picks the disadvantage, they could have taken cues from ORAS and simply make it so that the first battle they don't know their STAB, that way you aren't guaranteed to lose.

It's not like you're backtracking through the cave. The cave itself is empty and largely straightforward relative to other Victory Roads and the path the leads to it isn't exactly a maze.

We don't even know if Calem exists int he animeverse.
We've seen Red's counterpart (Ash), Gold's counterpart (Jimmy), Kris' counterpart (Marina), May, Dawn, Brendan and Lucas (in movie cameos), Lyra and Serena in the anime.
With Ash, May, Dawn and Serena we've also seen at least the mother but with all other protagonists including Calem we don't know if they even exist there. We didn't even see the mothers of many of them in the anime.

However since there's no wild encounters there's not much of a reason to not run back downstairs to heal even if you don't find it
