I would hope it's a sprawling cavern with a multitude of paths, trainers, and actually strong Pokemon that will kick your ass. At best we'll get 3 long corridors with maybe a side path for some dogshit revive or something, at worst we'll get a "Congratulations you made, enjoy the Elite 4!".

There's several fairly long segments that are completely optional, and an area that you have to come back to later. That's pretty solidly exploration by the most commonly understood colloquial definitions.
