I've made friends from those old census threads, and from the /vp/ixelmon server. And honestly, it's mostly woman friends, because the men here are just all fucking insane. By being a normal person I stand out among the crowd here and can make friends easily. It's not that hard. Maybe start by picking up a hobby that doesn't revolve around consumption of media.
