Ash should have won in the DP league and been retired as the protagonist during BW's "fresh start" era (or hell, better yet Johto if they weren't so busy shilling Gen 3). Unfortunately they kept him going and like crabs in a bucket/Kandata climbing the spider's thread dragged Ash from a victory in Kalos, arguably when the most eyes were on his exploits and his victory in SM will always feel Pyrrhic as a result.
The anime was already on a constant downturn in viewership but continually dunking on Ash + the pandemic causing production hell that was almost DB Super levels of bad + the issues during Masters 8 meant that Liko was always inheriting a doomed, sinking ship. And while the anime still has the periodic sakuga scene, unless it's objectively the most god tier Pokemon anime thing ever made, it will never, ever redeem the show in the eyes of the masses who will forever, and rightly, look down upon it as kodomoshit.
Ash deserved better, Liko deserves better.
