This is why I like the 1st season. The writers didn't strictly follow the game interpretation of Gym Leaders. They were just doing shit on the fly.

Back then, the anime staff weren't afraid to make the world the proper setting for an adventure with all sorts of bizarre encounters and adversaries to overcome. Sabrina being a villain was a great example of that, and lots of Psychic Pokemon were based on disturbing and occult things in general.

Honestly why I quit the games altogether, we were being shoveled shit; I found titles with similar stories to the manga and anime.

In the Anime, there are more than 8 Gyms. Shudo had a much darker aspect when it comes to the show if you read his blog on the Anime. The idea of battling under a volcano would never be approved after season 1.

In Pokemon chronicles, there's actual Gym Inspectors.
