it doesn't happen often at all, that is why it is so satisfying, essentially you really have one turn to either inflict the status effect or knock off its item and burn/para it.

landing mattered crits is nothing of cheating, your opponent can also land mattering crits to you as you do to them.

actually happened to me in gen 6 while I was building a team with odd items in wifi to just goof around and caught someone off guard.
