the real reason people didn't play much of the battle frontier is because of how tedious it was to build competitive Pokemon back then. now that it's been streamlined and is easier than ever to build competitive mons, it makes no sense that there's no battle facilities to use them in.

I have spent well over 400-700 hours playing the Battle Frontier depending on which game. ORAS not being Emerald is disappointing due to it being the comprehensive story. My anger comes from this proverbial middle finger.

I find it really interesting that B2W2 and USUM functionally have it even if it's not by name, although that's clearly because it's so easy to implement. It's a shame USUM's was fucky unless you used online as it's probably the best iteration, the random weather effects were a neat addition.

It was a great source of replay value for battles.
Even if you weren't going for the Prints, there was a co-op mode where you could just team up with friends and have fun.
It makes me sad that BDSP killed it for good.....

GameFreak said they stopped doing it because no one did it, not understanding that the majority of people didn't do it because 1: It cheated either outright like in Gen3, or de facto in Gen4&5 through having statistically impossible full 31IV perfect EV spread teams that a human could only make with literally months of tedious soul-crushingly unfun breeding and out of game knowledge. And 2: Usually had no cool rewards or achievements for doing it. Only Gen5 ever let you use part of its frontier early and for actual useful rewards (the subway giving you some unique TM's). And EVEN THEN I still played the 4&5 facilities to death.

1. I have spent a hundred hours at Platinum/HGSS's battle frontier alone, and likely just as much time at Emerald's.
2. Even when I'm not actually at the battle frontier, the battle frontier existing informed my entire postgame experience. Breeding pokemon, gathering berries, getting TMs, doing whatever side activities pop up along the way, all was for the sake of working towards completing these seemingly unfinishable infinite content that was the Battle Frontier.
With it's absence, the only thing to "work on" in-game is improving your competence at online battles, but online battles have no permanent progression system, dont feel like content that is unfinished, and are also very different from even just the battle tower, let alone the more out-there facilities.

Competitive Pokémon is largely influenced by meta, so you're unlikely to battle the variety of Pokemon you can in a Battle Tower or Frontier. The lack of tangible reward or recognition (in most games) doesn't help either.

I'd have to disagree, at least subjectively. I've built numerous Pokémon for the Frontiers in both Emerald and Platinum as part of my Ribbon Master Challenge. Skipped IVs but Nature, EVs, moveset, and leveling don't take that long. Maybe a week or two if I'm playing half an hour a day, if that. I even obtained a legit Lucky Egg in both games.

It honestly felt the most rewarding, because I spent that time focusing on one mon and developing an attachment to them. Compared to SWSH or SV, where EXP candies, Ability items, and Mints are the quickest method of building a Pokémon, it always felt less rewarding because of how much less effort is required.
