Touhou and MLP have inflated numbers because they have very productive communities. This doesn't mean their particular interest is found acceptable by the general populace, just that those interested in those subjects tend to be VERY interested in them. And this interest can be indirect too-- or even be the majority of it.
Also, the numbers can be just plain wrong due to several factors.
